Five documents cover most applications. A minority of applicants are asked for more, depending on nationality and travel history. Here is the full list, plus the specification details that cause most of the avoidable rejections.
The Core Five
1. Passport Bio Page
A clear scan or photograph of the page carrying your photo and details.
What gets rejected:
- Photographs taken at an angle, so the page is not rectangular
- Glare across the machine-readable strip at the bottom
- A corner or edge cut off
- Anything blurred enough that the passport number could be misread
Lay the passport flat, in good light, straight on. A phone camera is fine if you do that.
Validity: Your passport must be valid for more than 6 months for a UAE transit visa. The official guidance does not clearly state whether this period is calculated from the date of arrival or departure, so travellers should ensure they have more than six months of passport validity when travelling.
2. Photograph
Not a copy of your passport photo. A separate recent personal photograph meeting the current UAE photo standards.
Current requirements:
- Recent, high-quality colour photograph.
- White background.
- Face positioned straight toward the camera.
- Neutral facial expression.
- Facial features and eyes must be clearly visible.
- No shadows or reflections that distort the face.
- Hats or sunglasses are not permitted.
- Medical glasses are permitted only if they do not cover or obscure the eyes.
- The photograph should comply with applicable ICAO standards.
Important: The current official transit-visa guidance does not specify a transit-visa-specific pixel dimension, digital file format, or maximum file size. Do not publish a specific pixel size or file-size limit as an official transit-visa requirement unless your application channel provides one.
What gets rejected:
- Cropped from a group photo
- Shadow on the background
- Wrong background colour
- File too large or in an unsupported format
3. Confirmed Onward Ticket
A booked and ticketed onward flight, showing you leaving the UAE within your visa validity.
A confirmed ticket is: a booking with a ticket number, issued and paid for.
A confirmed ticket is not: a held reservation, an unpaid booking, a screenshot of a search result, or an itinerary you intend to book later.
This is the second most common refusal cause after document mismatches.
4. Flight Itinerary Showing the Dubai Stop
Your full routing, so the authorities can see the transit. Usually the same document as your onward ticket if you booked the whole trip together.
If your trip is built from separate tickets, provide both, and be aware that separate tickets also affect who can sponsor your visa.
5. Your Personal Details, Matching Exactly
Not a document as such, but the thing that fails most often.
The name on your application must match your passport exactly. Same spelling, same order, same middle names. Airlines and booking sites routinely shorten or reorder names, and a mismatch between your ticket and your passport creates a problem that is much easier to fix before submission than after.
Check: given names, surname, order, spelling, passport number, date of birth, expiry date.
Additional Documents Some Applicants Are Asked For
The current GDRFA Dubai service page for a 48/96-hour transit visa lists three core requirements: a recent colour photograph with a white background, a passport or travel document valid for at least six months, and a confirmed onward flight ticket. Applications should be submitted through approved airlines.
The official transit-visa service page does not currently list accommodation proof, bank statements, employment or study letters, previous UAE visa copies, parental consent letters, or sponsor letters as standard requirements. Additional documents may be requested through the approved airline or visa-processing channel depending on the individual application, but there is no current official GDRFA list specifying these documents by nationality or circumstance.
- Accommodation proof: Not listed as a standard requirement on the current GDRFA 48/96-hour transit-visa service page.
- Bank statement or proof of funds: Not listed as a standard transit-visa requirement. Do not publish a specific balance or six-month statement period for the transit visa.
- Employment or study letter: Not listed as a standard transit-visa requirement.
- Previous visa copies: Not listed as a standard transit-visa requirement.
- Consent letter for minors: No universal transit-visa requirement for a notarised parental consent letter is stated on the current GDRFA transit-visa service page. Airline, departure-country, destination-country or nationality-specific rules may apply.
- Sponsor letter: Not listed as a standard requirement for the 48/96-hour transit visa. The current GDRFA service states that applications are submitted through approved airlines.
Important: Do not use the document requirements for other UAE visa categories as transit-visa requirements. For example, GDRFA's separate five-year multiple-entry tourist visa has a six-month bank-statement requirement, but that is a different visa category.
If You Are Asked for Something Unexpected
It is not necessarily a bad sign. Additional checks are applied for a range of reasons and most resolve normally. Respond quickly and completely; a partial response restarts the clock rather than pausing it.
File Formats and Technical Requirements
Boring, and the cause of a surprising share of delays.
The current GDRFA Dubai 48/96-hour transit-visa service does not publish specific accepted file formats or maximum file-size limits for the required documents. These requirements may vary by the approved airline or visa-processing channel used to submit the application. Follow the upload instructions provided by your approved airline or processing provider.
Practical Advice That Holds Regardless:
- Scan or photograph in colour, not black and white
- Keep each document as a separate file rather than combining them
- Name files sensibly, so a reviewer can tell what they are looking at
- Check the file opens after you upload it
Before You Submit: The Check That Saves the Most Time
Print or open this and go through it properly. Ten minutes here saves days later.
- Passport scan is flat, complete, in colour and readable
- Passport validity meets the requirement, measured correctly
- Photograph meets the current specification exactly
- Name on the application matches the passport character for character
- Passport number matches
- Date of birth matches
- Onward ticket is issued and paid, not held
- Onward departure falls within the visa validity you are applying for
- Layover length matches the visa type you have chosen
- Every traveller, including infants, has their own application
- Any additional documents requested are included and complete
- All files open correctly and are within the size limit

Documents by Visa Type
The document set is the same for both transit visas. What changes is the onward ticket date, which has to fall inside the validity of the visa you choose.
- 48-hour transit visa: onward departure within 48 hours of entry
- 96-hour transit visa: onward departure within 96 hours of entry
Applying for the shorter visa with an onward ticket outside its validity is an automatic problem, and it is a mistake people make trying to save on the fee.
