FAQ
Dubai Transit Visa Questions, Answered
Who needs one, 48 versus 96 hours, fees, documents and what airlines check at boarding.
For a connection that stays airside, you need a valid passport, a boarding pass for the onward flight and anything your final destination asks for, since Japan sets its own entry rules. If the layover is long or you might leave the terminal, apply with us for a pre-arranged transit visa. It covers you if the Tokyo flight is delayed and the airline sends passengers to a hotel.
No. Italian passports follow the same UAE rules in Abu Dhabi as in Dubai. Etihad has run its own stopover offers over the years, but terms change, so check what your booking actually includes. For entry during the stop, we suggest a pre-arranged transit visa with us. It does not depend on a promotion, and it stays valid if your connection shifts to another UAE airport.
Apply as soon as your flights are booked. Approval times vary with demand and public holidays, so leaving it to the night before is a gamble. We check your passport scan, photo and onward ticket first, which avoids the most common rejections. Once approved, keep a copy on your phone and one on paper for check-in at Malpensa.
It is uncommon, but it happens when check-in staff cannot confirm your onward plans or your passport has less validity than the airline expects. Airlines carry the cost of a refused passenger, so they lean cautious. Bringing a transit visa approved by us, plus your onward booking, answers those questions at the desk and gets you to the gate.
Some travellers book a hotel inside the terminal, but rooms are limited and you stay airside. If your airline puts you in a city hotel, or you prefer one, you will pass immigration. We recommend a pre-arranged 48-hour transit visa for Italian travellers on overnight connections, so a late change of plan never leaves you stuck at the transfer desk.
